A while back we completed a project where we had the choice of either a Robot, a Lamp, or a 19th century Gas Lamp. In my choice, I chose a table lamp as its something I am familiar with. I ended up modeling mine after this lamp I found online. After choosing this one, I decided i wanted the inside to be hollow, as the model is to shine out light. Now, this was before we where working with lights and materials, so I didn't quite know how to make it look as realistic as the photo. But with the help of our senior TA, I learned some pretty helpful manipulation tips and ended with this. Now I cant say this is my best work. But it did however get me a solid grade. Afterwards I began looking for tips to help me out in the future.
knowledge.autodesk.com is 3ds max's help files, and it really simplified how i could have made this odd looking creation, somewhat better.
